German Film Festival 2017 | The Marriage of Maria Braun

It is World War II, and bombs are dropping all around. This is when Hermann (Klaus Löwitsch) and Maria (Hanna Schygulla) get married. They have one single night together before the husband must return to the front.

After the war, Maria – who was told her husband had died – has an affair with a black GI, Bill (George Byrd). But Hermann returns home unexpectedly from captivity. In her confrontation with husband and lover, Maria hits Bill with a bottle. When he dies, Hermann pleads guilty and is sentenced to jail. Maria awaits Hermann’s release, but when the time comes, he disappears without a trace.

The film is the first in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s BRD Trilogy (“BRD” stands for Bundesrepublik Deutschland), followed by
Veronika Voss and Lola, each film focusing on a female character in West Germany after WWII.
